Ben Marshall, the Head of Contemporary Music at Sydney Opera House, is responsible for programming the year-round contemporary music program and centrepiece festival Vivid LIVE. Since taking charge in 2010, Ben’s ambitious programming has driven major change in the public’s perception of contemporary music performances at the Opera House.
With more than 20 years’ music industry experience, his vision has brought new audiences to the Opera House, with acts including Bon Iver, New Order, Flume and The Stone Roses’ exclusive Australian shows in December on the hallowed stage.
Originally a lawyer in Perth, he encountered the electronic music world on a university exchange in London and began putting on electronic music nights on his return home. In 2003 he moved to Sydney, helping set up Sydney community radio station FBi. In 2005 he established Inertia’s touring division Civil Society (now Handsome Tours), bringing Sia, The xx and The National to Australia for the first time.
