Co-Director, In Place Of War / Founder, Un-Convention
Ruth Daniel is an internationally renowned Music Activist. Based in Manchester, UK, she is a cultural producer and entrepreneur whose projects range across the world, using music as a powerful tool for positive social change.
Among many other astounding achievements, Ruth is the founder of Un-Convention, the global grassroots music event and community with a presence in 25 countries delivering over 75 music development events over the last 7 years.
Ruth is the co-director of In Place of War, the Times Award-winnng enterprise based at The University of Manchester, which supports artists in sites of war, revolution and conflict. Pioneering the development of creative entrepreneurial programs that are delivered in the world’s most challenging contexts to give creative people the skills they need to make a sustainable living from their art, Ruth calls this project ‘academic punk rock’.
Inspired by her collaboration with Fora Do Eixo (‘Off Axis’), the revolutionary Brazilian music co-operative which has created one of the world’s most vibrant independent music scenes, Ruth and the Un-Convention team have joined with Fora do Eixo to develop the Off Axis Network for the rest of the world. With a pilot project currently running in the UK, Off Axis aims to provide an ethical and transparent co-operative model of audience development and artist networking that will extend unprecedented long-term opportunities for independent artists.
Last year, Ruth was awarded the UK Artist and Manager Awards’ Pioneer Award. This award aims to highlight the exceptional individuals who are forging new pathways in the music industry, placing Ruth with the likes of Amanda Palmer, Imogen Heap and Rough Trade founder Geoff Travis.
Ruth understands that the most interesting stuff happens on the margins. Her independent music journey started in her own local bands playing around Manchester and continued with her record label Fat Northerner Records, launched in 2003. With a strong DIY message for independent artists, Ruth is a go-to workshop curator and keynote speaker for music industry summits such as Barcelona’s Primavera Pro and Melbourne’s Face The Music.
Ruth Daniel will be in Melbourne as a special guest of Face The Music Conference and Melbourne Music Week 2015.
