When Sophie Miles started out as a teenage graveyard shifter on 3CR (followed by a long stint on PBS, and now occasionally on RRR), little did she know she’d become a music “lifer”. Writing reviews for fanzines and street press and helping organise benefit gigs were hobbies until life’s twists and turns led her to quit her day job in the nonprofit sector for the life of the freelance music journalist, writing for The Age, Rolling Stone and other mags. A growing fascination with “the biz” led her to managing bands, working publicity, organising shows, and starting her own label with her now husband Ash Miles. Back in the heady Myspace era, Mistletone started touring bands to Australia with nothing but a credit card and naive optimism. The label and touring company has grown organically for 11 years around a roster of artists Sophie deeply loves and respects, such as Beach House, Ariel Pink, Kurt Vile, Sharon Van Etten, Parquet Courts, Perfume Genius and local luminaries such as HTRK, The Orbweavers, Luluc, Ross McLennan and new signing, Tropical Fuck Storm.
